Three compulsory insurance deductions, 10.5% total

Every Vietnamese employee contributes a combined 10.5% of their salary across three schemes: 8% to social insurance (BHXH — pension and survivor benefits), 1.5% to health insurance (BHYT), and 1% to unemployment insurance (BHTN).

SchemeEmployee rateWage cap
BHXH (social insurance)8%50,600,000₫
BHYT (health insurance)1.5%50,600,000₫
BHTN (unemployment insurance)1%106,200,000₫

BHXH and BHYT share the same cap — 20× the government's official "reference level," which rose to 50,600,000₫ from 1 July 2026. BHTN uses a completely different, much higher cap tied to the regional minimum wage, so it rarely stops scaling for most salaries.

What reduces your taxable income

Before tax applies, your income is reduced by a personal deduction of 15,500,000₫, plus 6,200,000₫ for every dependant you've registered (a non-working spouse, children, or dependent parents, for example). If your insurance plus these deductions exceed your gross salary, you owe no tax at all that month.

This calculator covers tax-resident employees (anyone in Vietnam 183+ days in a year). Non-residents are taxed differently — a flat 20% on Vietnamese-source income, with no personal deductions or progressive bands.

FAQ

What if I'm a trade union member?

Union dues (an optional 0.5% of your insurance base) come out of your pay if you're enrolled, but aren't included in this calculator since union membership varies by workplace.

Do foreign employees pay BHXH?

Yes, generally — foreign employees working under a labor contract of one year or more usually participate in Vietnamese social insurance, with some exceptions for certain intra-company transferees and employees past retirement age.
