Three deductions stand between gross and in-hand

Your CTC (Cost to Company) and your actual take-home pay are rarely the same number — CTC includes employer contributions you never see in your bank account, while your gross salary itself has three things subtracted before it becomes take-home: your EPF contribution, professional tax, and income tax.

Why this calculator assumes the New Tax Regime

The New Tax Regime is now the default option for most taxpayers, and it deliberately doesn't allow HRA exemption, Section 80C deductions, or most other exemptions that made the Old Regime's take-home math dependent on your investment choices. That actually makes a take-home calculator simpler and more broadly accurate: under the New Regime, tax is calculated on your gross salary minus a flat standard deduction — no need to know your rent, your 80C investments, or anything else.

If you've opted for the Old Regime instead, your actual take-home will differ — usually higher if you have significant HRA, 80C, or home loan deductions to claim.

The EPF split, briefly

Your EPF deduction is a flat 12% of your Basic salary (not your gross), and it all goes into your own EPF account. Your employer also contributes 12% of Basic — but that money splits between EPS (pension, capped at 8.33% of just ₹15,000 of basic, so a maximum of about ₹1,250/month) and EPF (the remainder). This calculator shows both employer contributions separately, since they're building value for you even though they don't touch your monthly take-home.

Professional tax varies by state — some states charge around ₹200/month, others charge less, and a few (like most of India's northern and central states) don't levy it at all. This calculator uses a common approximation; your actual payslip may show a different figure or none.

FAQ

Why do I need to enter both gross and basic salary?

Income tax is calculated on your full gross salary, but EPF is calculated on Basic salary alone — they're genuinely different bases, so both numbers matter for an accurate result.

Does this include bonus or variable pay?

No — this calculator covers your regular fixed monthly salary only. A bonus paid separately would be taxed on top of this in the month it's received.
