The simplest gratuity formula in the Gulf

Since Royal Decree 53/2023 took effect on 31 July 2023, Oman runs the most straightforward gratuity formula in the region: one full month of basic salary for every year of service, pro-rated for partial years, with no tiers and no cap. It applies equally to Omani and expatriate private-sector employees not covered by the Social Protection Law, and it's paid in full regardless of whether you resigned, were terminated, or your contract simply ended.

If you started working before 31 July 2023

Here's the part most calculators skip. If your employment began before the reform date, your gratuity isn't calculated on the new formula alone — it's split at 31 July 2023:

  • Service before 31 Jul 2023: old formula — 15 days' basic salary per year for the first 3 years of that segment, then 1 month per year after
  • Service from 31 Jul 2023 onward: new formula — 1 month per year, flat

Both segments are added together into a single final payout. This calculator handles that split automatically based on your start and end dates — you don't need to work it out by hand.

FAQ

Is there a maximum gratuity amount in Oman?

No statutory cap applies under the current law.

What's changing next?

Oman is transitioning toward an employer-funded savings scheme (Article 137) that will eventually replace lump-sum gratuity for many employees. Until that rollout is complete, Article 61 gratuity remains in effect for new hires.
