How Bahrain gratuity is calculated
Under Article 116 of Bahrain's Labour Law No. 36 of 2012, eligible employees earn 15 days' wages for each of the first 3 years of service, and a full month's wages for each year after that. Partial years are pro-rated, and the calculation applies whether employment ended through resignation, non-renewal, or employer termination.
| Years of service | Rate |
|---|---|
| Under 1 year | No gratuity |
| 1–3 years | 15 days' wages per year |
| 4+ years | 1 month's wages per year beyond year 3 |
Per Article 47, the wage base is your most recent basic wage plus social allowance, if your contract has one — other allowances are excluded.
A 2024 administrative change worth knowing about
Since 1 March 2024, Bahrain's Social Insurance Organisation (SIO) has taken over administering gratuity going forward for covered non-Bahraini private-sector employees, under Decision No. 109 of 2023. The underlying formula in this calculator is unchanged, but the party responsible for paying out your gratuity may now differ depending on when your service falls relative to that date — worth clarifying with your employer or the SIO directly if you have long tenure spanning the transition.
FAQ
Does an employer-at-fault termination change anything?
If you're dismissed under the law's specific misconduct provisions, your employer may not be liable for gratuity in that instance — this is a narrow exception, not the general rule.
What happens to unpaid leave taken during employment?
Periods of unpaid leave are generally excluded when calculating your total service period for gratuity purposes.
